about

Water Pushes Sand brings together our obsessions with Chinese percussion music, street sounds, prepared piano and toy instruments.

"Water Pushes Sand" uses traditional rhythms from the 'Wen Chang' style of Sichuan Opera percussion taught to us in Chengdu by Master Zhong Kai Zhi. Its rhythms and structures are very close to the original, but our version incorporates western sounds and improvisational ideas. "Bicycle Groove" was inspired by the seas of bicycles we encountered daily in China, which gave us a strange sense of calm in the midst of urban chaos. It grew out of the larger work 'Chengdu Streetsons,' reated with composer Zou Xiangping. In "Delicious Ironies (Sichuan" Lindsay Vickery transforms samples of authentic Sichuan Opera Percussion into a wild and multi-dimensional romp, which serves as a catalyst for our improvisations.

In "Dear Judy," an homage to pioneering balloonist Judy Dunaway, "Motorcycling through the city of churches," and "Waltz" we explore the sounds produced by rubbing, squeezing, tickling and prodding balloons, trying to establish a common language between the unlikely combination of balloon and piano. "Felaminikuti" (which also features balloon) began 2001's foray into the world of small sounds. We started out using all manner of pocket sized keyboard and percussion instruments and soon epanded into $2 electronics. Eventually that work led us into performing Fluxus-style Clocked Out Sing-Alongs, with bizarre arrangements of American and Australian folk songs. There was something about the strange tuning of the toy piano that reminded us of the late Afro-beat master Fela Kuti.

The title "We move by intuition" was taken from Griswold and Craig Foltz' recording "Other Planes," while its bubbling piano grooves and flighty, colouristic percussion are perhaps more akin to our 2000 recording "Every Night the Sam Dream. The sprightly "Theme 1 & 2" were originally written for our 1997 production 'Dada Cabaret,' framing Vanessa's zany arrangment of Kurt Schwitters' "Ur Sonata."

"Experimentalism steeped in tradition, in an appreciation of the multiplicity of voices that the musics of the world have to offer" - Brett McCallon, Splendid E-zine (USA)
